Join Luke Tiller in NY City's fabled birding Mecca - Central Park for a days 'warblering'. Central Park being one of the only green spaces in the Metropolitan area become a magnet for nocturnal migrants such
as warblers and is a great place to study these birds.
Late May is the perfect time for this trip as migration is really hitting its peak and the later date gives us the chance of seeing perhaps some of the more sought after Boreal breeding species such as Tennessee, Cape May and Bay-breasted Warblers. The sheer number and variety of birds make this the perfect opportunity to study their songs, calls, behavior and other identification characteristics as well as to compare them to other species. The parks layout also tends to afford the kind of views of these species that one rarely gets at other sites. Luke has birded Central Park extensively and has plenty of insider knowledge on where to find the birds and get the most mind-blowing views of them (a great day to bring ones camera).
At this time of year and with the right prevailing weather it is not uncommon to have cumulative totals reported in the park of around 100 species of birds and as well as the warblers we hope to see many
vireos, thrushes and flycatchers amongst others. On his most successful day in the park Luke managed to locate over 26 different species of warbler including both Kentucky and Mourning Warblers and almost any trip at this time of year should produce around 18-20 warbler species.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to Central Park. Participants will meet early morning at a pre-arranged Metro North Train station or on a specific train and carriage and catch the train into the city for the day. Bring a packed lunch and prepare to spend most of the day in the park hunting down birds (there will be plenty of opportunity to do so from the comfort of various benches).
Please make sure to book early as participant numbers will be limited and in previous years Luke has found these trips to be very popular and fill quickly.
